A provincial heritage place, Middle Island in Miramichi River was a quarantine station in the 19th century, specifically for Irish immigrants fleeing the Irish Potato Famine. Many perished while on the Island. In 1873 it was declared a permanent quarantine station by the Federal Government until 1948.
